The Sideburns
In recognition of the coincidence in dates, The Sideburns gave a unique rendition of "Referendum Blues".
The lyrics were:
I've been listening to the "inners", I've been listening to the "outers";
I've heard all the quiet ones, I've heard all the shouters.
Every time I call my baby and try to get a date
She says, "Not tonight, there's a TV debate".
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a-gonna do;
There ain't no cure for the Referendum Blues.
All my friends told me: "You gotta make your mind up";
I didn't pay no heed, 'cos I thought it was a wind-up.
Called my baby up on the telephone,
She said, "Honey, please tell me, are we in the Eurozone?"
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a-gonna do;
There ain't no cure for the Referendum Blues.
I've been and gone and done it, at the polling station.
Now I'm just waiting, like the rest of the nation.
Called my baby up, she went the other way:
"I'm with a cute canvasser I met in early May".
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a-gonna do;
There ain't no cure for the Referendum Blues.
With apologies to Eddie Cochran and Jerry Capehart
Many thanks to Donald and staff of the Turf Inn
and to everyone who supplied raffle prizes
